Alright so as I well know, historical novels can cover any range of time. So when does your novel take place in or what time period are you considering?
For me it's the late-800s England during the Viking Raids.

I love Tudor history in England. That is my favourite hunting ground 1500-1600

Ooo! Good period in time though generally when I'm talking about that area of the world I prefer either the late 1200s early 1300s or the 1689-1746 (yay Jacobites!).

Yeah, I know less about the Jacobites than the Tudors but I do enjoy learning about them too. Bonnie Prince Charlie and all that lot

It'll be France/London: The 1300s for me. I'll be doing a great bit of research for this book, and I couldn't be more excited. For the month of January, I'm going to be nursing this book like a baby. I hope to get it published. And in the mean time, I'm going to be learning a lot about my chosen time period as well.
It's so win/win.

Ooo 1300s is an interesting time period. That's about the time of the Hundred Years War isn't it? You can do a lot with that! I can't wait to see what you're looking at for it.

I'm thinking of jumping on the historical bandwagon for a companion piece to my vampire novel. It'll probably be in the 1600's or 1700's for timeline's sake. I don't know anything about either time.

What location are you looking at, Americas, Europe, Middle East, the Orient, Africa? I do quite a bit of re-enacting on the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War from the Native American perspective. Let me know what you need and I'll track down some good sites that are reputable. Or I can give a lecture if it's the period I do for public education. I'm one of those wierd people who teaches and shows what it was like to live back then. I am apart of History Alive and the M.E.S.A.W.M.I. (Many Encountered Societies Activley Withstanding Mass Invasion) They gave me a word and had me make up what it stands for. I cover Lenape' (Delaware), Shawnee, and Cherokee.

I know some stuff about those time periods too. I'm a history major and though that's pushing it for me (I think of anything after 1745 as modern), I could still probably help you if you need help in the research area.

Either France or England, probably both. I'm leaning toward the 1700's because I think it's more plausible for my female MC to become a writer in that time. If there was any war during that time then it would help to know a bit about it. Mostly I need to know what a typical day would have been like for someone back then. Was it common for women to have any sort of job, or to go to school? Even little things like the most common cause of death. Any sites focusing on this time would be much appreciated. Thank you both.

Allright, that is definitely a task to answer. I know more about England than France. England has a few rebellions that they put down in Scotland (the Jacobite Rebellions of 1689, 1709, 1715, 1745 for sure) and then you have the French and Indian War which spills over from the colonies between France and England and then later you have the American Revolution and French Revolution both. Women usually did not go to school as there were not public schools. There were some finishing schools for girls, but those were upper class girls. Usually women were not really educated, especially not anyone without money. As for jobs, you have the traditional maids of various sorts for homes, house wife, seamstress, inn servers, and nannies (though I'm fairly certain that they had different titles for those). Women who were authors were either widows or considered fairly loose. Even then they were looked down upon by other women and sometimes by men and they usually went by a penname.

the time for my novels will be either 1600s or 1400s-1500s leading into the later years of 1600s and 1700s because my time setting is between the English and Scotland battle but deals with the highlands and lowlands of Scotland.
