One of the novels I'll be writing in 2010 is about a vampire. I've always been a big fan of vampires in books and movies so I know a lot about them and the legends. But I'm curious to know everyone else's opinions on vamps. What they like and don't like about them. Is the animal blood instead of human blood thing overdone? Do you mind if the vamps walk in sunlight? How do they turn into vampires?
I don't have too many of the vampire basics set for my story, only the plot and characters. So now is probably a good time to get started on this. Any and all answers are welcome here.

Is the animal blood instead of human blood thing overdone? Not overdone, just annoying. I mean, I prefer Nosferatu type of vampires. Really dark creatures who go after pure blood rather than settling for some dirty animal. I suppose when you get desperate you turn to whatever you have, but the whole feeding idea just makes it more interesting to me. How can they survive with no humans near by? Creates suspense.
Do you mind if the vamps walk in sunlight? Not really. I'd like to see them get SOME damage to them, but if I read a book and a vamp walks out into daytime and sparkles, I'm putting the book down and losing some faith in humanity.
How do they turn into vampires? By being bitten by other vampires!
Just my opinions. There are hundreds upon thousands upon millions of girls (and some boys) who have fallen in love with some sparkly vampire who drinks animal blood. If you want your vampire to be that way, I'm sure there will be thousands upon millions and hundreds more of readers who will adore it. It just isn't my personal cup of coffee.

Hahaha, no. I am a Twilight fan, but that's not what I want for my book. 'Sparkly' isn't one of the things I'd associate with vampires normally. But I agree that they need some weaknesses, I'm just not sure what those should be yet. I mean, sunlight, stakes, crosses, holy water... The blood thing is tricky. I don't want to go with animal blood because it's become the normal vamp thing to do. But some of my characters are too nice to take a human life. The only other alternatives I've come up with are a blood bank, and a morgue. Being bitten to turn into a vampire was my first choice as well. But I've heard so many other versions (being born a vamp, having to drink blood first, dying then being 'reborn') that I want to knoe what other people prefer. Thanks for your input, Pen!

Oh seesh. This is a toughie. I'm also a serious hard-core vamp fan, and I have to admit I draw the line at the sparkly. I also am planning to write a vampire novel this July (Immortal Child) and I think the daytime thing is getting to be overdone. Personally, I'm going back to the Bram Stoker tradition - but MY way. I want some serious weaknesses, because that will help create some interesting situations & conflicts. If the daytime thing is taken away, then what, really, is left? Animal blood: Meh. Personally, I would see it as someone pulling a prank on an unsuspecting vamp - hand 'em a mug of blood and say it's human but it's really pig's blood or something just to see if they can tell the difference. Hilarity/tragedy/whatever ensues. How does the person become a vamp? Whoof. I'm more flexible on that one if it makes sense within the universe the author's spinning out for me. I'm pretty easy to keep happy as a reader, but there's only a few that really made a deep impression on me, and Anne Rice's Interview With a Vampire is number one on my list. Both the book and the movie.
