name: L. Burke Ivey nickname: Burke location: Michigan, about an hour outside of Detroit occupation: freelance writer and part-time mom gender: tomboyish pseudo-lesbionic female (no, lesbionic isn't a "real" word; yes, it is awesome; yes, you can borrow it) website: iveyink.wordpress.com/
appearance: picture Christina Ricci with red-orange hair. That's pretty much me. I've also been told I look like Gemma Ward, Sissy Spacek, and Lauren Ambrose. All of these people are actually much hotter than I am, but do bear some superficial resemblance.
hobbies: in order of frequency: watching cartoons, writing, playing Sims 2, reading. in order of preference: writing, reading, playing Sims 2, watching cartoons.
favorite books: SOME of my favorite books are: "The Phantom of the Opera", "Alice in Wonderland", "The Haunting of Hill House", "Fahrenheit 451", "Only Begotten Daughter", "World War Z" by Max Brooks, and "Lamb" by Christopher Moore. There are many, many more.
favorite movies: Everything by Tim Burton, except "Planet of the Apes". Movies with Steve Buscemi, Johnny Depp, Clea Duvall, and/or Winona Ryder in them. "Howard the Duck". "Star Wars" (the original trilogy). "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra". "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog". Sam Raimi films. Oh yeah, and absolutely ANYTHING horror.
favorite tv shows: "Venture Brothers", "The Daily Show" & "Colbert Report", and "Futurama". Anything a bit smart & funny, really. I enjoy watching "Forensic Files" and CSI clones, as well, but I'm trying to watch them less because they tend to be a bit depressing.
favorite music: Well, one of my all-time favorite bands is Oingo Boingo. If you know who they are, then we're probably going to get along just fine. I also like the Boomtown Rats, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Weird Al Yankovic, and Creature Feature. I like listening to classic rock, '60s hipster music, and New Wave.
favorite writing music: I don't listen to music while I write anymore, but when I did, I liked film scores by Danny Elfman, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams, and Hans Zimmer; classical music (Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Mozart's "Requiem", Beethoven's later works, Chopin); and.. I hate to admit it.. power ballads by the likes of Def Leppard, Dire Straits, and AC/DC. Most of what I wrote in high school was written to Bryan Adams' "Summer of '69" album, interspersed with Rachmaninoff, Alice Cooper, the Carmina Burana, and Cab Calloway. Yow.
about you: My goal for 2010 is to be earning a solid living off my writing by the end of the year. Right now I'm making about one-fourth the amount necessary to pay all my expenses and live decently. I've decided to prioritize my novel-writing habit in order to further refine my writing skills, force myself to finish projects in an organized and determined fashion, and get some finished manuscripts which can then be self-published and/or submitted for publication.
**********
current novel title: Adrastus (it's unlikely to have a 'finished' title until it's actually finished..)
current novel genre: epic fantasy
current novel summary: Colonials are part of the oldest race in the world, the common ancestor of all races and the most populous. When a plague suddenly begins killing them off by the thousands, their 'cousin' races are held accountable by the government. Both political and religious forces move for war. An exiled Bard and her mentally scrambled friend Byron try to uncover the truth behind the plague before the biggest religious cult in the land destroys every last non-Colonial in existence.
current novel excerpt: (I've been working on this novel for more than three years. My most recent 'soft' copy was erased due to a malfunction with the thumb drive on which it was stored. I have all my old notes and portions of the original draft, but the entire thing needs to be re-written.)
current novel cover: Ha! I wish. :) current word count: n/a word goal: 50k at least; 150k would be optimal.
future plans for 6Mo, 6No: I plan to participate in February (with the Adrastus story), May, and September, as well as doing NaNo in November. I had planned to take one month with each novel, but now I realize I can easily take two months without (hopefully!) burning myself out from excessive writing.
February, the Adrastus project, is the most 'detailed' of all my plans.
My May project is based on a page-and-a-half treatment I wrote about six months ago. It's a horror / murder mystery - my first attempt at that genre outside of short story format. I'm looking forward to it, even though I am completely unprepared!
My September project will be another fantasy, of less epic proportions, loosely based on a piece I wrote in high school. I intend to take a few weeks to write out an outline and notes for this one before beginning any writing.
are you published?: Well, I write articles for an Australian marketing firm. You can see about two dozen of them by visiting the Portfolio page of my site at (http://iveyink.wordpress.com/portfolio) and choosing a link. By selecting a category on one of these outside sites, then scrolling down to "Some terms explained", you'll find links to articles I've written. I can't link them any better than that because, as works-for-hire, they're not my property, and I would be violating copyright law to link them directly from my own site. Isn't that sad?
